What are Solfeggio Frequencies?

Before delving into the Solfeggio frequencies, I need to share how I came across them and their fascinating history. I’d heard of Solfeggio music through a friend when I was going through my meditation teacher training. I already knew the benefits of binaural beats, and thought I might look into this further, since Solfeggio frequencies are often paired with binaural beats. What I found – unexpectedly, I might add – was a rich history, one where human intuition took the stage and only now is science beginning to catch up. This music has some roots in Christianity, but these frequencies are universal and you can listen to them in secular or religious contexts.

If you prefer the video version of this post, it’s right here – and it’s a little different than the text version here.

History

Have you ever chanted? As in, chanted to music at a church, or perhaps at a powwow? Perhaps you’ve chanted OM as part of meditation. There is a lot of history and information about these tones online. Because quite a few articles have been written, I’ll give a summarized history here, with links to references throughout this post, should you want to read more.

The kind of music goes back to the 11th century to Guido D’Arezzo, an Italian Benedictine monk. He worked with a choir and wanted teach his fellow monks the Hymn to St. John the Baptist. At the time, there was no written system and he wanted to help them remember the notes and tones themselves rather than by rote memorization. He created a six note scale that included UT, RE, ME, FA, SO, and LA. This is known as “solfege,” meaning the Fa-Sol method of teaching. Not until centuries later would TI appear and UT would become DO – but we still use D’Arezzo’s system today.

Superhuman chanting

Not long after, Gregorian monks would use this 6-tone scale in their chants. Those Gregorian chants reportedly made the monks almost “superhuman.” They experienced great health, high amounts of energy, and needed little sleep – even as little as two hours per night – due to their constant recitation of these musical tones. If you have ever been to a Catholic church service, you have heard or recited Gregorian chants in some form or another.

While the Gregorians kept up with their chants throughout the centuries, the idea and knowledge of these tones stopped until the 20th century.

Dr. Joseph Puleo

Dr. Joseph Puleo was studying the Book of Numbers in the Bible and made a startling discovery. In verses 7:12-83, he deciphered a series of repeating sacred numbers – 3, 6 and 9 – by invoking his inner Pythagoras and using the references to repeating numbers in the verses to reduce them to single digits. 3, 6, and 9, along with 1,7, 4 among others were the long-lost Solfeggio frequencies. These were all the original frequencies of Solfeggio as D’Arezzo had used in his 6-tone scale. All Solfeggio frequencies are divisible by 3, and can be reduced to single digit numbers 3, 6, or 9.

The Solfeggio Frequencies

The different Solfeggio frequencies follow here. I also include a video to each one that I have listened to before or currently listen to as I work. These are all about an hour long. As with binaural beats, it’s best to listen with headphones, but if you don’t have them, you still benefit from the calming music. Interestingly enough, as I researched, I found that these frequencies correspond with the chakras, as well. The interconnection of all things is truly remarkable!

UT

UT – 396 Hz – 3 + 9 + 6 = 18 and 1 + 8 = 9. This frequency heals feelings of guilt and fear and transforming them into courage and joy. It also helps to connect you with Source energy. It also helps heal the root chakra.

RE

RE – 417 Hz – 4 + 1 + 7 = 12 and 1 + 2 = 3. This frequency clears out negativity and stagnant energy, creating the space for positive change.

MI

MI – 528 Hz – 5 + 2 + 8 = 15 and 1 + 5 = 6 – Physical and mental healing, repairs DNA; returns the body to homeostasis, and helps create clearer thinking, as well as connections to spirit guides. Also known as the “Miracle Tone.”

FA

FA – 639 Hz – 6 + 3 + 9 = 18 and 1 + 8 = 9. This is the “love connection” frequency – it facilitates healing both in terms of romantic or platonic relationships, but also the relationship with oneself. It also promotes tolerance of others and acceptance of oneself.

SOL

SOL – 741 Hz – 7 + 4 + 1 = 12 and 1 + 2 = 3. This frequency opens the channels of intuition, helps you to speak your truth, and helps to eliminate toxins through cleansing.

LA

LA – 852 Hz – 8 + 5 + 2 = 15 and 1 + 5 = 6. This frequency helps create communication between the self and Spirit, paving the way for spiritual experiences and Oneness.

Why listen to Solfeggio Frequencies?

Different articles and videos out there will say that different Solfeggio Frequency music can heal ailments, reduce anxiety, banish negativity from your life, heal the DNA structure in your cells, open chakras, bring out your higher, loving self, and other claims. Who doesn’t want healing from various ailments, anxiety, or even move to a higher spiritual plane as a result of listening to this type of music?

But is it too good to be true?

Interestingly, there aren’t a lot of research studies out there on the healing power of Solfeggio Frequency music. These frequencies are often paired with binaural beats, which do have sound scientific evidence for helping with sleep, meditation, relaxation, anxiety, focus, etc. It can even be used to put people in trance states.

A Natural Gravitation to Music

I will say that humans, in general, seem to navigate towards music for a variety of reasons: religious services, to relieve stress, as background music at a party, as a way to express our feelings. Because of this, it’s not a huge leap to say that Solfeggio music can have healing properties, especially given that it is subdued and relaxing anyways. Then again, so is classical music. Gregorian monks also used a six tone scale for their chants consistent with the Solfeggio frequencies. They experienced great energy, needed little sleep and had other benefits, as referenced above.

Listen as You Work

I have been listening to different Solfeggio music frequencies as I work. (Not during meditation; I generally go the “silent” route, unless I’m listening to a particular binaural beat track for something specific, such as relaxation, releasing tension, increase creativity, etc.) It’s calming music for sure, and sometimes I DO feel a sense of greater energy. Can I definitively say it has made a difference? Not yet, but then again I haven’t been listening regularly or consistently for a long period of time. After researching this, however, I’ll listen to Solfeggio music for six weeks (as I work) and update this post and let you know if I see or witness any changes.

Do you listen to Solfeggio frequency music? What has been your experience with it?
